FAQs

Can we book a stay during the winter season?

We are unable to host guests through the winter because the property’s water supply comes from an above ground cistern tank. This would freeze during the cold South Dakota winters.

Am I able to bring my dog allow for my Outpost Adventure?

Absolutely! We can relate to traveling with our furry companion and welcome yours. Out of respect for other guests, please plan to pick up any waste and have a leash to restrain when necessary.

Is four-wheel drive required to reach Outpost?

The road is maintained through all seasons and does not call for four-wheel drive.

What is a cistern water system?

A cistern is basically a large tank that stores water. Potable water is purchased through a supplier in Custer and delivered to the property. Pumps fill up the tank and allow for the shower haus to be supplied with water.

What outdoor amenities are available at the property?

Each Outpost and the Canvas Tent have their own private fire ring with Adirondack chairs for guests to enjoy. The property has five acres of private land with automatic corn feeders set up to attract wildlife. On the south side of the acreage, you’ll find the Black Hills National Forest boundary line. The Park Service allows for hikers to walk freely into the Forest and create their own adventure. You’ll find an immense amount of Ponderosa pines, mossy rocks, and even some Geocaching.

What type of kitchenette amenities are provided?

Guests have their own microwave, mini fridge, and water dispensing machine. There is no running water within the units, so we do not provide plates or utensils. If you bring food items to reheat or cook in the microwave, please plan to bring disposable dishware and silverware. Coffee cups along with K-cups and creamers are provided. Wine glasses, a wine opener, and smores sticks are included with your stay. Our recommendation is to plan on dining at the incredible local spots downtown Custer, Hill City or Hot Springs.

Can I bring a camping grill?

Not a problem! Just be sure to include disposable dishware and silverware as we do not have the facilities to wash dishes.

Can I do laundry?

The Lost Sock is a laundromat downtown Custer that provides a great service to the community.

Will I need a state or federal park sticker?

South Dakota state parks do require a sticker for entry, as do the federal parks and monuments in the area. You can learn more specific, buy your passes, and book your cave tour here.

What amenities are provided in the Shower Haus?

The Powder Haus accommodates one person at a time and features a private, interior shower stall and a private toilet with vanity sink. With white walls, countertops, and gray flooring, the Powder Haus offers a spa-like environment, complete with linens, including body towels, face towels, washcloths and make-up removal wipes, and toiletries, including Ginger Lily Farms hand soap, shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Indoor and outdoor lighting is provided for your comfort and safety.

Please Note: Like many rural areas, the property on which Outpost Adventures exists is limited in terms of our access to plumbed water. Many landowners dig a personal well or set up a cistern system for running water, which requires the hauling and storage of water for their plumbing needs. At Outpost Adventures, we offer running water as an amenity for our guests through a water holding tank, located above-ground, which pumps into the Powder Haus. Please be considerate of other guests and the environment when enjoying your stay at Outpost Adventures.
